We here at Living in Chester County (LICC) are suckers for heartwarming stories and this is one we just had to share. On August 17th an event was held for a local family with a 4 year old son with a rare auto immune disease called HLH. It’s a rare disease that attacks your blood and the treatment for this mimics that of a cancer patient. Since March of this year, Mason had been through treatments and just recently received a bone marrow transplant. As with many medical issues comes a growing number of medical bills, doctor visits and other various things. Financially it has taken a toll on this family, as well as emotionally. This story is about how a child turned her hobby into helping a sick child.
Here’s the part that really melted our hearts, Cece is a unique 9 year old girl, who has a great love for sewing. In particular she makes adorable pillows and pillow cases, she would give them to random people to cheer them up. She saw the joy that these pillows brought to others and decided that she wanted to sell them to help someone in need, Mason’s family was the first thing that popped into her mind, she had gone to Pre-school with Mason’s brother. Her mom was thrilled with the fact that her daughter wanted to make a difference and ran with Cece’s idea, she thought why not give more people the chance to participate? So they invited various vendors that were willing to give a certain percentage of their profits towards the family in turned the day into a huge vendor event, along with yummy food. The vendors came pouring in and the support of the community was so overwhelming. There was a wide variety of vendors including Scentsy, Slumber Parties, Tupperware, Pink Zebra. Origami Owl, Thirty one, Stella and Dot, Mary Kay, Tastefully Simple, Nerium AD, Quilts n Pillows By Rhonda, Premier Jewelry, Crafts by Kerri, It Works body wraps, Dragon Fire Ceramics and Forever Dry Basements and of course Cece’s Caring Cuddles.
The event was a true success and one girls caring heart helped to give the family $1310 towards Mason’s medical bills. In addition to the vendors they had a great deal of donations from various generous companies within the Chester County area. From local restaurants to a flat screen TV, there was an item for everyone. If anyone wants to donate to help this family there is an account set up at Citadel Federal Credit Union under the name Sara Newman/ Mason Brown Benefit Fund. This non profit account will be maintained to help Mason to help the family with the overwhelming medical expenses. You can also help the Brown family by purchasing a pillow from a Cece’s Caring Cuddles( facebook page to come soon), she has a pattern for everyone.
The latest update on Mason: On the 18th of August, Mason had his last Chemo treatment and on the 21st of August he had his Bone Marrow Transplant. He is doing great and playing video games with his Dad already. The doctors are cautious and call this the “Honeymoon” phase. They are expecting that he will feel wiped out and yucky till the new cells take over and his blood counts starts going back up but we will all remain positive that this little boy is going to be just fine.
